ASUU: Jonathan is politicising lecturers’ strike

• SSANU starts indefinite strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has criticised President Goodluck Jonathan for criticising the strike by the university teachers. Read more
ASUU, in a statement by the Chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter, Dr Olusegun Ajiboye entitled “Nigeria at 53: No message of hope for Nigerians Yet”, said the Presidential Media Chat was empty.
Dr. Ajiboye said the president ‘is politicising the ASUU strike’ , saying it was unfortunate for the president to treat the sector with such ‘hatred and disfavour’.
He said: “It was clear that Mr. President was just rehearsing the positions of his aides. He said ASUU strike has been politicised. The question is by who? It is evident that rather than ASUU, the president and his team are the ones politicising education and playing with the future of the teeming youths of this country. ASUU members successfully midwifed the 2011 general elections and they were not accused of playing politics then! It is only now some people are waking up to label members of ASUU of playing politics with strike.
“ASUU members are not politicians. When ASUU members risked their lives to conduct free and fair elections in 2011, they were not referred to as politicians. Now that they are fighting for universities, they have become politicians. We reject that position; we believe that that position is not correct and it does not represent our motivation.
“ASUU members are patriotic Nigerians who believe in the emancipation and development of education in this country. We cannot play politics with Nigeria’s future. The 2009 agreement is sacrosanct. It is aimed at re-fertilising and rejuvenating the Nigerian University System (NUS).”
Ajiboye also said it was wrong for President Jonathan to say state universities should not be part of the agreement.
“The President hasn’t got a good grasp of reality. It is JAMB that regulates admissions into both federal and state universities – including private universities. It is the NUC (National Universities Commission) that oversees accreditation in all universities. It is the President that does not realise that the Nigerian Universities System is one system. For him to be talking about federal or state universities is an anomaly and I believe he will go back and study the issue from a different dimension.”
The chairman of ASUU at the Lagos State University (LASU), Dr Fikayo Idris, said it was wrong of the Federal Government to complain about state universities’ involvement in the strike.
He said: “It will be mischievous of any official, especially those who have knowledge about the negotiations that took place ahead of the MOU ASUU signed with Federal Government last year.
“The NEEDS Assessment Report ,which government itself conducted, highlighted the rots in the universities system at both the state and federal levels. That was why both parties agreed Federal Government’s intervention should be for both federal and state universities.”
The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) yesterday began an indefinite strike until the Federal Government accedes to the 2009 agreement signed with it.
The Chairman of the union in UI, Wale Akinremi said: “We have been short-changed by the government on the area of subventions and we cannot take it again.”
He spoke yesterday at a congress held by the chapter at the Arts Theatre, UI, Ibadan.
The union leader said: “Non-teaching members of staff are wrongly placed in the education system, and these issues must be holistically addressed.”

Market woman shot during protest

A 60-year-old woman, Mrs. Comfort John, was shot in the thigh by riot policemen, during a protest by market women over the demolition of Afaha Offot Market in Akwa Ibom State. Read more
PUNCH Metro learnt that the policemen had stormed the market to disperse the protesters, who were demonstrating against the Uyo Capital City Development Authority, when John was shot.
It was learnt that John, who had a stall in the market, was coming back from Itam Market on Friday where she had gone to purchase goods.
One of her daughters, Miss Patricia John, told our correspondent that as soon as her mother stepped into her shop, the protesting women were seen running in every direction as riot policemen fired gunshots and teargas canisters at them.
She said, “One of the bullets hit my mum on the thigh. The riot policemen, who shot her fled. If not for the Divisional Police Officer, ‘C’ Division, Mr. Mike Esu, who helped me to take my mum to University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, my mum would have died just for nothing.”
The village head of Afaha Offot, Mr. David Etuk, who condemned the attack, said he did not understand the rationale behind the demolition of Afaha Offot Market by UCCDA.
He said the inhabitants of the area had been operating at the market for over 100 years, adding that it was difficult to explain what prompted the UCCDA to embark on the demolition of the market without any prior notice.
He said, “The UCCDA has never come to Afaha Offot Market to mark the place for demolition. There was no previous warning whatsoever. What we noticed on that fateful Friday was the demolition exercise being carried out by UCCDA.
“Our women have been selling in this market for over 100 years. If they feel the place should no longer be used by market women, let them provide an alternative place for them.
“We are going to write a protest letter to the government over the decision of the UCCDA  to demolish the only market we have.”
President of the Afaha Offot Market, Mrs. Anna Robert, said the goods the authority destroyed were worth N200m. She added that since that day, the women had been staying at home with no money to feed their families.
She stated that some of the women selling in the markets were widows and that they used the proceeds from sales in the market  to fend for their families.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson, said the police did not shoot anybody.
He said that the story was false and that the police were ready to defend it.
He said, “We were monitoring the demolishing team. After the University of Uyo incident, no policeman has shot anybody. The police did not even go there with baton.
“They were all there in their vehicles. What they did was to throw teargas to disperse the shop owners. The accusation is wrong.”
All attempts to reach the chairman, UCCDA, Mr. Ignatius Edet, proved abortive as he did not respond to his calls or text messages sent to his telephone.

Taraba crisis: Suntai seeks out-of-court settlement

Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State on Monday sought for an out-of-court settlement in a suit he filed challenging the state House of Assembly’s decision to reject his letter of resumption to duty.  Read more
Suntai had filed an action before a Jalingo High Court challenging the decision of the assembly, which rejected his  letter of resumption of duty after returning from a medical treatment abroad.
The presiding judge, Justice Ali Andenyatso, adjourned the case to October 28, for further hearing or for the court to receive the outcome of the out-of-the-court settlement.
Counsel to Suntai, Elijah Nyaro, who stood in for Mr. Alex Iziyon (SAN), filed an oral application seeking a three-week adjournment to enable the parties to reach an out-of-court settlement.
Counsel to the Assembly and Speaker Haruna Tsokwa, Mr. Yusuf Ali (SAN) and Mr. Yusufu Akirikwen, respectively, did not object to the request.
Justice Andenyatso said, “Even though the ruling on the application for the transfer of the matter to the Court of Appeal as requested by the Taraba Assembly was ready, I am adjourning the case to October 28 as prayed by the lawyers.”
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the majority of the lawmakers had rejected the letter sent in by Suntai, on his return from treatment abroad on August 25, seeking to resume full duties as the state governor.
They raised questions as to whether the letter was written by the governor and, therefore, directed the acting governor, Alhaji Garba Umar, to continue in office and advised Suntai to go back and continue with his treatment in the US.
Following this, Suntai went to court seeking the interpretation of section 190 of the 1999 Constitution.
The section provides that “if a governor transmits a written declaration that he is proceeding on a vacation or he is otherwise unable to discharge his duties his functions shall be discharged by his deputy in  an acting capacity until he transmits to the Speaker of the House of Assembly a written declaration to the contrary.”

Jonathan didn’t tell the truth about 2015 –New PDP

The New Peoples Democratic Party said on Monday that President Goodluck Jonathan did not tell the truth when he  claimed on Sunday evening that he  never told  anyone that  he would not contest in 2015. Read more
Rather, the faction of the ruling party insisted that the President promised in February 2011 not to contest after one term.
Jonathan had during  a media chat said, “There was no agreement with anybody that I will serve for only one term. If I had signed any agreement with anybody, they would have shown you the agreement.
“I did not say that I will not contest in 2015. In Addis Ababa, that was when I advocated single term of seven years. My argument was that to  be more productive, maybe we should consider single term of seven years.
“I said if Nigerians agree to that, I may not be involved. I did not say I will contest or not. Those who said I have signed an agreement, they should show the agreement.”
But the New PDP,  insisted on Monday that Jonathan  had in 2011   promised not to contest in 2015.
The National Publicity Secretary of the New PDP, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze,  in a telephone interview with our correspondent, said,    “In  February, 2011, while interacting with Nigerians and diplomats working in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union in Ankara, Turkey, the President  said that he would have loved that the Nigerians in Diaspora voted during the election that year, but added that that would be very difficult.
“Presently, the law does not allow voting outside Nigeria and so this year Nigerians in Diaspora will not vote but I will work towards it by 2015 even though I will not be running for election.”
Eze  also said the President went ahead to say that four years was enough for anyone in power to make significant improvement and that if he couldn’t improve on power within this period, it then means he would not do anything even if he was there for another four years.
He  said that at the appropriate time, members of the New PDP would expose the President, adding that with his statement on Sunday, it would be more difficult for Nigerians to believe him.
The New PDP spokesman added,  “Why would our President deny the statement he made in a broad-day light, even in the presence of international media?
“Why, because of ambition, would our President deny the words that came out of his mouth and statements he made not under duress? Truly, the President is desperate and with this;  he has shown that he cannot be trusted.”
Eze said that at the appropriate time, Nigerians would get a copy of the communiqué of the PDP governors meeting, which he said was attended by 20 governors in December 2010.
The meeting, he added, was a prelude to the meeting of the National Executive Committee  meeting that approved the guidelines for the 2011 elections, including the presidential primaries.
He said that it was at the meeting convened  by  the  then National Chairman of the party, Dr.  Okweliseze Nwodo, that an agreement was reached that Jonathan would be in office for just four years.
A copy of the agreement reached at the meeting was said to be with one of the   governors of the South-South supporting  the President.
Meanwhile, a former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has criticised the silence of the government over the rumour  that some   members of the Peoples Democratic Party were  being picked and detained for no identifiable crime against the country or anybody.
In a statement by his media office in Abuja, Abubakar  said the PDP crisis  was an internal family disagreement, which should not give anybody the right to arrest those who  express dissenting voice.
According to him, “criminalising legitimate dissent over internal disagreements could lead Nigeria to a police state and thereby, defeat all the basic features of the democratic system.”

Police nab three teenage stowaways at Lagos airport

The Airport Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested three teenagers for allegedly attempting to illegally board some international flights in Lagos. Read more
Commissioner of Police for the command, Salahu Waheed, said the suspects, Lateef Popoola, 13; Amadi Joshua, 14; and Ukpabio Onyedikachi, 14, were arrested at different times at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja.
Waheed, while handing over the suspects to their mothers, said there was a need for their respective state governments to rehabilitate them like the Edo State Government did with teenage stowaway, Daniel Ihekina, who was arrested on August 24, 2013 after sneaking into the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik plane.
He said, “These boys were found at different times at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Their aim was to get into any plane and travel out of Nigeria.
“I decided to hand them over to their parents so they will be well taken care of and stop dwelling on the fantasy that you can just come into the airport, enter a plane and travel.
“Their state governments should try to rehabilitate them just like Edo State did for the stowaway in Benin.
“Lateef Popoola is from Ogun State; Amadi Joshua is from Ebonyi while Ukpabio Onyedikachi is from Abia State.
“The airport is not a place that you can just come into and travel. There are formalities. We don’t want to see these children here again.”
The teenagers, who spoke to PUNCH Metro, said they had been nursing the idea of travelling abroad, adding that they were not ready to execute their plans yet.
Lateef said he went to the tarmac to observe how aeroplanes take off and land.
He said he was able to gain access to the runaway by sneaking into an airport apron bus, but was arrested shortly after alighting.
He said, “I am not in school, I dropped out in Primary three. I was arrested last week Wednesday. I actually wanted to travel but I have yet to decided where I will go. So, I just went to the tarmac to see the aeroplanes.”
Lateef’s grandmother, Adunni, said she had no idea that her grandson was nursing the idea of travelling out of the country. She said she had been responsible for his upkeep  since his mother abandoned him at infancy.
“I did not know that he wanted to travel. I just did not  see him last week and I started looking for him all over the place. It was on Saturday that I finally found out that he had been arrested,” she said.
Onyedikachi and Joshua were said to have been arrested after asking some security agents where Malaysia flights were boarding.
After being questioned, the boys, who were both in SS1, said they had no travel documents and were immediately arrested.
Police said Onyedikachi’s brother was in Malaysia and it was possible that the teenager wanted to travel out to see his brother.
Onyedikachi, however said, “We were at the departure area of the airport. We did not attempt to travel out. We were just loitering and wanted to see the aeroplanes. We did not want to travel out on that day.”
Onyedikachi’s mother berated her son for his escapade. She said she had warned him and Joshua to be well behaved at all times.
She said, “I had no knowledge of what they did. Onyedikachi is well taken care of and is not suffering. I don’t know what pushed him to do this.”

Yobe killings: Death toll rises to 90

The death toll in the  Sunday   attack  by suspected Boko Haram members on the Yobe State  College of Agriculture, Guijba,  has increased from  50 to  90. Read more
A security  top source  made this known on Monday just as  the Amnesty International, the  Nigeria Labour Congress, the  All Progressives Congress, the Arewa Consultative Forum and     the  Jama’atu Nasril Islam flayed the incident as  ignoble, wicked and horrendous.
Our source said that the authorities of the school, while searching  the bushes around the school with local hunters and soldiers on Monday ,  recovered  28 more bodies.
He added  that the search became necessary when the authorities conducted a headcount of the students that survived and discovered that some were still missing.
Before  the source spoke,   an international human rights group, the Amnesty International,  had in a statement on Monday , quoted a Damaturu resident as having said that 62 bodies  were counted at the Sani Abacha General Hospital Mortuary, Damaturu.
“One resident of Damaturu said that on Sunday he counted 62 bodies at the Sani Abacha General Hospital mortuary in Damaturu, Yobe State,”AI said in a statement by its Africa Deputy Director, Lucy Freeman.
The AI called on the government to adopt urgent measures to prevent further killing of students, especially  in the North-East.
It  observed that the attack on educational institutions and students had increased since 2012 and should be brought to an end immediately.
“Since 2012, we have seen an escalation of lethal attacks against students and schools. On top of the tragic loss of life, children are being prevented from accessing education.  It is high time for the authorities not only to investigate these deplorable incidents and take those responsible to justice but to take measures to prevent them,” the group added.
The group  stated that the attacks on schools had become more vicious and brutal since the beginning of 2013 with the latest taking place when schools were in session.
The AI  said  that Boko Haram, its affiliate organisations  and  individuals “in northern Nigeria must immediately stop all attacks on schools, students, teachers and pupils.”
When contacted, the Director of Defence Information, Brig.- Gen Chris Olukolade, said,   “I have not got that report on the number of casualties so far.”
Efforts to get the comments of the Yobe State Director of Press, Abdullahi Bego, did not yield result  as calls to his two mobile phones did not go through.
The PUNCH however gathered that Boko Haram  members  on Monday engaged soldiers in a fierce battle at the deserted college.
Investigations revealed that the insurgents regrouped and engaged the troops who were deployed in the school after the Sunday mayhem.
Another  security source confided in one of our correspondents that the soldiers, however, repelled the attack even though no casualty figure was given.
“Several trucks of soldiers have moved into the area. As we are talking, soldiers are also fighting the insurgents  at one border community between Borno and Yobe states, where the insurgents burnt a Dangote truck and killed seven people on Sunday,” he added.
But Olukolade  said there were no insurgents around the college of agriculture.  He  confirmed  that   there was an  encounter between soldiers and the gunmen in a forest  between Borno and Yobe states.
He said, “There are troops already deployed in and around the school. At the moment, there are no insurgents around the school. Troops are still in pursuit of the terrorists.
“Right now there is an ongoing operation in a forest area between Yobe and Borno states where the terrorists were sighted.”
When contacted  Spokesman  for the JTF in Yobe State, Lt Eli  Lazarus, said   he was not aware of the recovery of 28 additional bodies from the school’s environs.
He also said that it was not correct to say that the insurgents attacked troops at a  location around the institution.
According to him, the soldiers were on the ground on the institution’s premises and were holding it as a crime scene.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress, the  All Progressives Congress, the Arewa Consultative Forum,    the  Jama’atu Nasril Islam,  the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, and two former governors – Ahmed Bola Tinubu and Orji Kalu – joined the AI on Monday in condemning the college massacre.
They appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to  step up the tempo against terrorism and bring the culprits to book.
To the  Boko Haram, they said: Stop immediately, the senseless killings of hapless people, especially students.
The  NLC , which was  the first to react,  said the killing of the  students in their sleep   was  reprehensible   and should not be allowed to happen again.
It said through its  Deputy National President, Mr. Promise Adewusi,  that the killing   represented the height of bestiality which all Nigerians must be united to confront and prevent.
The congress  said, “It is a very dastardly act, it is something that every well-meaning human being must condemn. Going and sneaking in like a thief to slaughter innocent students is the height of bestiality.
“Everything must be done to halt it. We have had 22 students killed in the past but this is the height of bestiality that we have had in the country.
“If those behind these heinous acts  are fighting for social development or whatever they claim,  what have those students got to do with it. The government should take it more seriously; this thing will consume everybody if nothing is done.
“These are no longer Christians alone, there are northerners among them. Let us stop playing politics with this thing. We think the time has come for all Nigerians to come together to fight and defeat this threat of terrorism.”
The APC, in a statement  by its Interim National Publicity, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, enjoined  Boko Haram to immediately cease all attacks and embrace dialogue in the interest of national peace and security.
The party called on traditional, religious, political and opinion leaders in the North-East to intervene urgently to end the cycle of violence by the sect.
It stated, ‘’It is clear that this Boko Haram menace cannot be resolved by the government alone, hence all stakeholders must urgently intervene to complement government’s efforts to end the insurgency and get those behind it to embrace dialogue.
‘’There can be no justification for Boko Haram to continue to kill and maim innocent citizens, especially because the victims are not just fellow Nigerians like them, but most are actually their kith and kin.”
Also, the ACF and the Sultan  Abubakar Sa’ad lll-led JNI said the killing  was barbaric.
The  ACF,    in a statement  by its National Publicity  Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani, therefore  urged the intelligence community  and security agents to brace themselves  and  nip such wicked acts in the bud.
It called on the Boko Haram members  to lay down their  arms  and embrace peaceful means of resolving their grievances.
The statement reads in part, “The report of cruel killing of many students of College of Agriculture in Yobe State by gunmen is dastardly as it is aimless, precisely because students have not done anything in the society or government that can possibly grate the nerves of those who have committed the gruel- some acts.
“As to those who relish in violence, it bears repeating that there can be no way killing of innocent people and students can address their concerns. More so that all religions preach peace and love of neighbour.”
“Our hearts go to those who have lost their wards to the dastardly acts in the hope that God will provide them with the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses,” it said.
On its part, the JNI  said that it received the news of the  Yobe  killing and that of   Attakar Chiefdom in the Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State with consternation.
Its  Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Aliyu, said in a statement that the killings were utterly  callous and condemnable.
The group called on the Federal Government to  restore the use of GSM to  the affected states to facilitate security alert/tip-off in situation(s) where insecurity, has wreaked unprecedented havoc.
It said, “JNI will continue to ask questions: Who are these blood thirsty fellows? How did they gain access to the college? Why were they not prevented or arrested? What was the motive behind such heinous act? Isn’t intelligent gathering supposed to aid security operatives and why is it not yielding the desired results? Indeed there is much more than meets the eyes.
“We make bold to say that Muslims are worst hit in this quandary situation. We therefore call on government at all levels to do everything possible as a matter of urgency to stop these evil acts of terror repeatedly being unleashed on innocent souls and restore the use of GSM in the affected states to facilitate security alert/tip-off in situation(s) where insecurity, has wrecked unprecedented havoc against innocent citizens.”
Also, Tambuwal described the attack “as ignoble, wicked and horrendous.”
The speaker said killing defenceless students was “inhuman”, especially coming about two months after gunmen murdered  another set of students at the Government Secondary School, Mamudo, also in Yobe State.
Tambuwal, who tasked security agencies to bring the killers to justice, noted that they must also introduce new strategies to be a step ahead of terrorist groups.
In a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Imam Imam,  the speaker called on Nigerians to be vigilant and assist security agencies with information on the hideout of suspected criminals.
Part of the statement reads, “We in the House of Representatives feel the grief and pain of the families of the victims.
“In this their hour of need, we will stand with them hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder.
“We want to assure them that as brothers, we will continue to confront the threats of terror confronting our nation, and we know we will come out stronger and victorious.”
On its part, the National Congress of Nigeria Students described the killings as shocking.
The group, in a statement in Abuja  by its National President, Abdulsalam Abdulfatah, said the incident was a  display of  barbaric mentality.
It said that it had raised the alarm that schools  in the North should be provided with adequate security.
“It takes a government that does not value the lives of its citizens to turn a deaf ear to such a call. This shows how far the Nigerian government values the life of its citizens,” the group said.
A former Lagos State Governor, Ashiwaju  Tinubu,  condoled with the Governor of  Yobe State, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam, over the incident, which he said, “jars the conscience and reminds us of the sinister nature of the enemy our nation now faces.”
In a statement to The PUNCH, Tinubu  said, “I was moved to deep sorrow upon hearing the news of the tragedy that befell the college.
“As a governor, you are the father of all residents in your state. Thus you carry the heavy grief of a father; but you don’t carry this grief alone; Nigeria grieves with you.”
Urging Gaidam to “look beyond the death and spilled blood of these innocent children, he added that  “in times like these, it is easy to give up and retreat into the shadows these evil forces have created but we must not give way to sorrow.”
“This is a contest for the soul of Yobe State and Nigeria; we dare not lose it. Should these murderers accomplish this, they will only attack another institution, then another, until they are all flattened,” Tinubu said.
Kalu, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Oyekunle Oyewumi, charged security agents to put a stop to the killings   to restore confidence of Nigerians in the  country.
“It is sad that despite the efforts of the government, very little appears to have changed,” he said and prayed  that such  would not occur again.

Three years ago, I dreamt….THE NIGERIA OF MY DREAMS

Light everywhere like it is the first day of creation!
I see beautiful houses and mansions. I see skyscrapers. I see good hospitals; schools too. I see good roads and transport systems. In fact, I’m on a train; on my way to catch an appointment in the capital city. The light rail system is second to none. Read more
I see an industrialized economy where the dividends of democracy have been delivered to the people by the government of the people. This is a nation where agriculture is the backbone of the economy. I see exporters, so many goods leaving the border.
I see the birthplace of great ideas as companies’ troop in their numbers. I see a nation where everything works.
I see nation where leaders are true to their words; Men of integrity. Yes, men with passion and women with dreams and purpose driven youths. I see a Police force with the verve and vivacity to truly fight crime. I see a nation where night never falls, as people go about their business without fear. I see a nation can clothes, feeds and shelters its people… a nation where farmers are king.
A nation of wealth, prosperity, substance, a nation of… God, where on earth is my thesaurus?!
As if to answer my question, I hear a loud sound from behind and my vision goes blurry. As I struggle to keep the image flowing, the sound gets louder…
And then I wake up.
I have been dreaming, I realize. I had fallen asleep in one of the very frustrating traffic no-shows that have become synonymous with Lagos.
As I try to adapt to my new environment again, I saw an army of beggars approaching. I see hungry people. I see people putting their lives at risk just to sell their wares, haggling with one potential buyer here; struggling to keep up with another who has collected an item without paying.

I see little boys wash windscreen of cars for a few naira which may or may not be given to them by the driver. I see people ‘lapping’ in buses because they cannot afford the fare. I see long queues in filling stations. I see a nation with people proud to be called ‘second hand’ as they gracefully patronize ‘Okrika’ clothing. I see dilapidated buildings, poor infrastructure, abandon social amenities. I see a frustrated people.
In few words, I see poverty, crime, sickness, hopelessness, corruption.

Corruption, oh!

The cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabric of the nation… It’s all too much for me to take.

We live the exact opposite of my dream.

Yes, in my dream, it was beautiful. It felt so real; my dream of my nation.
That was the Nigeria in my dream. That is the Nigeria of my dreams.
Three years ago I dreamt and with each passing day the dream becomes clearer. As we celebrate our 53rd independence, there is no better time to truly envision tomorrow. What do you want Nigeria to be like? What is your dream Nigeria? ‘Eko o ni baje’ one man says, ‘Nigeria would not spoil’ we should all scream.
Nigeria may not be all we want it to be today but it could be all we want it to be tomorrow. Together we can make our dream Nigeria a reality.

The prosecutor, Corporal Cyriacus Osuyi, while making application for his remand, said Oriyomi confessed to killing two other people.
He said, “The defendant made a confessional statement that apart from the deceased, he had equally killed one Musibau and one Jummy in 2010, when they had a confraternity conflict in Mushin.
“It is because of these facts that I apply that the defendant be remanded in prison custody sequel to Section 264(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice, Lagos State, 2011.”
The magistrate, Mrs Y.B Okusanya-Badejo, remanded the defendant in prison pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
The matter was adjourned till November 19.

President: I never said I won’t contest 2015 election

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said contrary to reports making the rounds, he had never at anytime promised that he would not contest the 2015 presidential election. Read more

He also denied the claim by Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State that he signed an agreement with some Peoples Democratic Party governors for only one term in office. He challenged anybody with a copy of such agreement to produce it.
Jonathan was fielding questions from a panel of journalists during the Presidential Media Chat in Abuja on Sunday.
He answered questions ranging from politics and education to security, economy and power.
When pressed to be specific on whether he would contest the 2015 election, the President insisted that it was too early to make his intention known adding that doing so would violate the Electoral Act which stipulates the time frame within which politicians can declare their interests.
The President, however, said the fact that he had not declared his position did not mean that those who were interested in the seat could not go ahead and start working.
Jonathan said, “There was no agreement with anybody that I will serve for only one term. If I had signed any agreement with anybody, they would have shown you the agreement.
“I did not say that I will not contest in 2015. In Addis Ababa, that was when I advocated single term of seven years. My argument was that to  be more productive, maybe we should consider single term of seven years.
“ I said if Nigerians agree to that, I may not be involved. I did not say I will contest or not. Those who said I have signed an agreement, they should show the agreement.”
The President blamed past governments for the continuous campaign of violence being carried out by members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
He said the needless killings would have been avoided if the menace of the sect was curbed from the beginning.
“Boko Haram did not start today. I was Vice-President in 2009 when (Mohammed) Yusuf (Boko Haram leader) was killed. People talk about Boko Haram as if Jonathan caused it. It started before 2009 but because it was not handled well, it has grown into a cancer and it has become terrible. If something happened and you don’t take the right action, it will continue. But I can assure Nigerians that it will be brought under control,” he added.
When asked whether Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, was truly dead, the President replied, “I don’t know whether he is dead or alive. I don’t know him and I have not seen him before.”
The President, who regretted the protracted strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, described the action as unfortunate. He added that it had been politicised.
He called on the   university lecturers to consider the plight of their students and the sincerity of government and call off the strike.
The President, however, said it was wrong for ASUU to go on strike because of the state of infrastructure in universities when it was his government that initiated inventory of infrastructure in the institutions and returned a verdict that something drastic must be done.
He said, “ASUU strike is very unfortunate. There is no time a government has taken inventory of properties in schools but we set up a technical team that visited all universities. When the report was presented, I said it must be presented to all governors during NEC.
“We said things must change but it can’t be done overnight. For us to do that inventory shows that we are committed. For ASUU to go on strike for infrastructure is not fair. We are doing inventory for polytechnics and colleges of education too and they are not being done for fun.
“We expect ASUU to work with us. It is unfortunate that the strike lasts this long because we have witnessed strikes before and most of them are called off when government don’t even do up to what we have done.
“Politics have fallen into so many things. We may be seeing something different.”
Jonathan faulted those who have been describing the country as broke or bankrupt, saying that also smark  of unhealthy politics.
“People play politics with serious issues. How can you describe the country as bankrupt? What parameters did they use?  Anybody that says Nigeria is broke is playing politics and talking out of ignorance,” he declared.
On the power sector, Jonathan promised that before the end of the first quarter of next year, power would be stable in the country.
He also promised that his administration was building security architecture to tackle oil theft.
While admitting that corruption was  prevalence in the country, Jonathan however said the menace was not the nation’s number one problem.
He said, “We did an in-house investigation and we are still doing it now. I am not saying there is no corruption in the oil sector but the way people are looking at it may not be the real thing. Recently, we have  asked some auditors to look at the books again.”

Nwachukwu explained that in Bayelsa State, troops of 343 Regiment of the JTF in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area clamped down on 98 illegal crude oil distillation sites.
He said the sites were operating with 119 illegal distillation tanks and 37 large open wooden boats (Cotonou boats) laden with stolen crude oil and illegally-distilled Automated Gas Oil.
He said in a separate operation, troops of 29 Battalion and the Gun Boat  Patrol Company, arrested a barge with three crew and a vessel christened MT Tora Eagle with 11 crew members in Bodo waterways and Akassa creek in Rivers and Bayelsa states respectively.

Another policeman caught on video demanding N10,000 bribe

For the third time in the past two months, another policeman has been caught on video demanding a bribe of N10,000 from a motorist. Read more
The footage, secretly filmed by a passenger at the back seat of a vehicle in Onitsha, Anambra State, has so far received thousands of hits on YouTube. The three-minute 18-second video which first appeared on the YouTube channel of one Tola Tim, has since become an Internet sensation.
In the video, a policeman apprehended the driver of a vehicle that was coming from Akure, Ondo State to Umuahia, Abia State. The policeman sat in the front seat with the driver, and after checking the vehicle particulars, declared that he had discovered some discrepancies between the documents and the chassis number.
In the video, the policeman explained that the number ‘0’ was the last number on the chassis number inscribed on the vehicle, while number ‘3’was the last number on the documents presented to him for perusal.
The driver was seen arguing with the policeman that he had asked him to veer off the road in order to enable him (policeman) do proper checking of the vehicle. Once the alleged discrepancies were discovered, the policeman insisted that he would collect N10,000 before he would release him.
The driver’s appeal that there was an unintended mix-up somewhere and that the vehicle was not a stolen one fell on deaf ears.  A nursing mother who sat at the back also appealed to the policeman.
The man in uniform bellows, “Settle us. Just give us N10,000 make I waka comot. Or is it too much? If I knew you stole the vehicle, I won’t collect money from you.”
But the driver, on noticing the adamance of the policeman, said he won’t give in to his demands.
It is three much! I want you to take me to your station. I’m not afraid of anything. I can go back to Akure. At worst, I will miss my appointment in Umuahia. Why will I part with N10,000 on the vehicle I didn’t steal? No sir! I can’t do that.
“I will rather go back to Akure, get the registration officer and other supporting documents, come back with another vehicle and clear myself. And that is to tell you that I have not done something wrong,” the driver said.
The unidentified driver also calmed the nerves of the apprehensive nursing mother who clutched a baby girl to herself. “My sister, don’t worry! At worst, you will sleep in a hotel with your baby when I go back to Akure,” the driver added.
The policeman replied, “Eh eh. It is three much. Wetin make am too much?” After ruminating over the issue for some seconds, the policeman, who was armed with a gun, ordered, “Driver, come down.” And the video went dead.
Meanwhile, outrage has trailed the incident on various social media platforms. Those who have watched the video online describe the encounter as a pointer to the depth of rot and decay in the Nigeria Police Force.
They urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to conduct an orderly room trial to ascertain the policeman’s culpability in the alleged crime and place appropriate sanctions on him if found guilty.
An anonymous reader on lindaikeji.blogspot.com says apart from condemning the act of corruption and sacking the culprit, more needs to be done to cater for the welfare of the rank and file of the police.
The reader said, “If you have a police officer as your relative, you will understand better. The income they get can’t even feed them alone not to talk of their families. The country doesn’t cater adequately for their needs. Many police barracks look like refuse dumps and they are expected to live there with their children.”
But a YouTube user, Paul Saint, argued that there is no excuse for being corrupt, attributing the behaviour to greed.
Saint stated, “This has nothing to do with the service welfare of the police. Corruption in Nigeria has nothing to do with low or high salary pay. If you are corrupt, no matter what you earn, you will still find ways to illegally enrich yourself. Most cases of corruption recorded in this country are perpetrated by persons who are otherwise fairlycomfortable with bribes.
“Corruption is as a result of greed only. Not poverty or low pay. We must condemn corruption at all times and not make excuses for it. But even if they are not well paid, there is no excuse for corruption. The most corrupt persons in Nigeria started off with collecting less than N10,000 and because we excuse them or celebrate them, they step up their demands to millions and billions. Well paid or not, do not demand or collect bribe.”
It will be recalled that three cops have so far been dismissed by the police authorities after being filmed demanding bribes from motorists.
A police sergeant, Chris Omeleze, who was caught on video camera extorting N25,000 from a motorist in Lagos in August was the first casuality of the social media whistle-blowing.
Two traffic policewomen, corporals Elizabeth Itolor and Jennifer Azingbe, who were also videotaped receiving N100 bribe from a commercial bus driver at the Oshodi/Apapa Expressway were dismissed earlier this month.

Jonathan meets security chiefs, says ‘I’m depressed’

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday  had   an emergency meeting with service chiefs over the killing of  50 students of the  College of Agriculture  in Yobe State. Read more

Jonathan  disclosed this while fielding questions during the Presidential Media Chat broadcast live on television stations. He had  earlier at the 53rd Independence Anniversary Interdenominational Church Service   at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, admitted that  activities of the sect  were depressing him and his administration.
He said after meeting with the service chiefs, he  directed them  to meet and come up with ideas  on how to step up the efforts aimed at curbing   the  attacks  and killings by the insurgents which he described as “ embarrassing.”
The President  said, “Like I said earlier today (Sunday),  sometimes one needs a lot of courage to move on. My seat as the President can be very hot and can also be very cold.
“I held a meeting with service chiefs on the killings of students in Yobe State before coming for this media chat. We discussed and resolved that we must do more.
“You will agree with me that  incidence of attacks came down after I declared state of emergency in some states but it is coming up again. I have asked the service chiefs to meet again now and see what we can do to stop these embarrassing attacks.”
When asked to respond to allegations that operatives of the State Security Service killed innocent people alleged to be members of   Boko Haram   at the Apo Legislative Quarters in Abuja, the President said there was enough reason to believe that those shot were  suspected  terrorists.
Jonathan, who added that  some of those arrested had made confessional statements, said that  security agencies had even foiled several plots by insurgents  to bomb  Abuja this month.
He said, “I have been briefed about it and people have made confessional statements. That is why I say sometimes, some of these people who call for probe don’t mean well for this country. And I always say that when there are confrontations between certain operatives and criminals in a place where people live, maybe one or two people  who  may  be innocent   probably might  be affected during the exchange of fire. But definitely,  there were Boko Haram elements  among them .
Again, if you monitor global trend, there was this feeling about Al-Qeada network having links with Al-Shabab and Boko Haram because these criminal gangs have networks. And the feeling was that in September, they would bomb many cities across the world to commemorate 9/11. It  happened in many parts of the world. What happened in Nairobi, Kenya,  is being linked to that and people attempted to also bomb Abuja in September.
“Some were arrested and some were killed but people confessed. There were obviously Boko Haram elements among them.”
At  the  Independence anniversary  church service tagged  “Living with certainty in uncertain times,” the President said     he lacked words and courage to explain to the bereaved families, and indeed Nigerians, what happened to the College of Agriculture students on Sunday.
While describing Boko Haram activities and other challenges facing his administration as creations of the devil meant to slow him down,  Jonathan  vowed that the insurgents  would not succeed.
He pledged that although forces of evil would continue to attempt to drag the nation back, he would leave the country better than he met it.
He said, “Today, you will agree with me that if you were in my shoes, you will lack words to say. We had this programme in mind when we went to bed last night that by this time, we would all gather here to thank God for what he has done for this great country.
“But then, only a few minutes after midnight, reports came in that about 21 students were murdered in Yobe State by a group that described themselves as Boko Haram.
“If you are wearing my shoes, what courage will you have to stand here before Nigerians? What message will you send to Nigerians and the parents of these people, our future leaders, students of a college of agriculture? Read more“Will you say that the killing of these students is political? The students belonged to which political group? People who killed them don’t even know them. Will you say it is ethnic cleansing? They belonged to which ethnic group in Nigeria?
“Will you say it was based on religious belief or what? These killed students, are they Christians, Muslims or what? This is the situation almost on a daily basis. It’s quite depressing!
“But having listened to the message of the CAN President (Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor), you will agree with me that all of us have hope. By God’s grace, we will get to where we want to get to as a nation.
“The journey of a nation is just like the journey of an individual. We will encounter obstacles. Sometimes, it gets darker when you are getting nearer. The challenges we are seeing now are very transient and  we will surely get over them.
“No Boko Haram or any group can suffer this country. We may suffer pains just like Jesus Christ said at critical moment that though the spirit is willing, the body is weak.
“I believe these challenges are the creations of the devil to slow down our development as a nation but we have reached the turning point where we must all move to join the developed society.”

Stupid colleague caused our arrest –Suspect

Some robbery suspects engaged in a war of words on Thursday at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters. Read more
The suspects, who were recently arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, traded blames over who caused their arrest.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects, Fatai Balogun, Wale Oluwatosin and Gbenga Olusanya, were arrested shortly after robbing a family in the Iju, Ishaga area of the state.
Police authorities said after the robbery, the suspects shared the loot and went their separate ways.
Oluwatosin was, however, spotted while hiding his gun at the backyard of his house.
An eyewitness was said to have reported to the police and Oluwatosin was arrested. It was learnt that through his confessional statement, the police apprehended his colleagues.
One of the suspects, Balogun, who claimed to be a barber, said he regretted following Oluwatosin for the robbery.
He said, “He (Oluwatosin) is a very stupid boy. He is just 20-years-old and I see him like a younger brother because we grew up in the same area. Some days ago, he told me that there was a man in the area drove a nice car and he had studied the man’s movements.
“We got guns and when it was midnight, we stormed the house. We stole about N500,000 and I felt this was enough, but Oluwatosin was not satisfied. He stole CDs, laptops, seven mobile phones, video games and other items that we did not need.
“Carrying such things around at night could draw suspicion to us and I told him this but he was too stubborn. As I predicted, he was the one that caused our arrest. He is stupid.”
Another suspect, Olusanya, said he was not an armed robber but a smuggler. He said he knew the gang but had only followed them for one operation.
He said, “I followed them for a robbery some months ago but we did not succeed. On that particular operation, we met policemen on the road and decided to turn back. However, the driver was drunk and we had an accident.
“We had to snatch another car which we used to escape. After the unsuccessful robbery, I went back to my smuggling business because I felt those guys were not serious armed robbers. They were too clumsy.”
Oluwatosin, who is the youngest among the suspects, said he went into robbery so he could impress the suspects.
He said the suspects usually gave him N7, 000 as an informant but he wanted to make more money which made him to lead the operation.
He said, “I knew Balogun was an armed robber and I looked up to him. He used to give me N7,000 as an informant, but I felt I could do more. I did not know I would get caught after my first robbery.”
Deputy Police Public Rleations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Father beats 3-year-old son to death for defecating on bed

What could have pushed a 26- year-old man, Ikechukwu Okoro to beat his only son, three-year-old Chinedu to death? According to shocked neighbours, Ikechukwu who lives with his only son woke up by 4.30 am on September 13, 2013 to discover that the sick boy had defecated on the bed. Read more
In anger, he picked a cane and flogged him mercilessly until then boy gave up the ghost. Not knowing what to do afterwards, he picked up the dead boy and headed to a nearby clinic where he was confirmed dead.
Okoro, who is now in police custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), told Sunday Sun that everything happened in a fit of anger.   “It was out of annoyance that I flogged my son, Chinedu to death. The boy had been sick for some time. It was when I woke up around 4.30am that fateful day that I discovered that Chinedu had defecated on my mattress.
“He was the only son I had. When I discovered that he had defecated on the bed we were sleeping together. I went outside to look for a stick to flog him, just like any other normal father would have done to his recalcitrant child. I found a bitter leaf stick and used it to flog him twice.  I didn’t know that it could lead to his death.
Ikechukwu Okoro who hails from Isieta Amanato, in Isu Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, explained that his wife, Uchechi abandoned him in 2009 with Chinedu, his only son who is now  deceased.
He blamed Satan for the misfortune. “It was Satan that used me. When I was flogging him, I perceived an irritating odor from his mouth and I stopped flogging him immediately. I rushed him to a nearby clinic around my area.  The same doctor that I took my son to, took us to another hospital.  There, the doctors  told me after  examination that my child was dead.”
Okoro said he could not believe it when he brought the corpse of his child home, and raised alarm that attracted the attention of neighbors. “They came to ask me what killed my son. I confessed to them that he died as a result of the flogging  I gave him because he defecated  on my mattress.”
“My son had been sick, his stomach was swollen before I flogged him,” Okoro lamented.
One of the neighbours, Ogbonnaya Orie who was the only person who pleaded with Ikechukwu  to  stop beating his son said  all his efforts fell on deaf ears. “And when Chinedu died, he begged me to assist him to bury the  child but I refused,” he said.
Ebonyi State Police Command through its State Criminal Investigations Department, (SCID) is currently interrogating Ikechukwu Okoro  at Isieta Amanato Isu Onicha.
The Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Mr Maigari Abbati Dikko told Sunday Sun that it was a shock to him that  the suspect, Ikechukwu confessed to have flogged his own son, Chinedu to death.

The police commissioner said the case was reported at Isu Onicha Divisional Headquarters of the police and the suspect was arrested with his son’s corpse. We won’t join New PDP — Chime, Jang

Some Peoples Democratic Party governors, on Friday, denied being among those reportedly planning to join the New PDP. Read more
The governors are the Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, Kaduna State Governor, Ramalan Yero, and the Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime.
The governors were reacting to reports that more PDP governors were plotting to ditch Tukur to join their fellow governors in the Abubakar Baraje-led PDP.
Jang, who is also the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum recognised by the Presidency and the party leadership, denied any such plan.
Speaking through his Commissioner for Information and Communication, Abraham Yiljap, Jang said, “I can only ask how can?
“How can he (Jang) abandon a house he built and  live in another person’s house. It is just unthinkable and somebody’s wishful thinking.”
The Kaduna State Governor, Ramalan Yero, on his part, said reports about him planning to join the New PDP were baseless rumours, which was the figment of the imagination of mischief makers.
The Director General, Media and Publicity to the Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Maiyaki, said, “This is totally untrue. It is the figment of the imagination of those behind such wild rumours.”
Enugu State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke, also dismissed insinuations that the state Governor,  Sullivan Chime, was planning to pitch his tent with the New PDP.
Ugwoke told one of our correspondents over the phone that such would never happen.
“It is not true at all. That can never happen. Never!
“It would never happen. Governor Chime is 100 per cent with President Jonathan.
“The governor is even the one making others to see reasons to be with the President.”
When  SUNDAY PUNCH visited the PDP secretariat in Enugu, party members spoken to equally described the reported plan as untrue.
When asked, Mr. Loius Amoke, a personal assistant to the Enugu PDP chairman, said, “I don’t know about it (defection), but it can’t be true because no one is even discussing such. Call the chairman to speak to you.”

Jealous ex-girlfriend sets rival ablaze

Tragedy occurred at Onugba Nike area of Enugu State when 20-year-old Cynthia Onah allegedly set ablaze another woman, 22-year old Chinwe Igwe for snatching her boyfriend, one Chika Kelechi. Read more
According to police report, Cynthia had gone to her former boyfriend’s house at 11:30pm with a gallon of fuel and emptied its content  on Chinwe who was already asleep and set her on fire. The incident happened at Onugba Nike  East Local Government area of Enugu State.
The Commissioner of Police Enugu State, Mr. Mohammed Adamu described the incident as very unfortunate. “It is terrible that a girl because of jealousy would set another girl on fire simply because they are befriending the same boy.”
He explained that the incident took place on August 24, 2013 after Chika and Chinwe who had dated each other for almost five years, had a misunderstanding and stopped dating each other.
Chika later met Cynthia, a prostitute and they started dating. And after a month there was a disagreement between them. Later, Chika reconciled with his former girlfriend, Chinwe and they started their love life all over again.
CP Adamu explained that  the suspect, Cynthia Onah threatened  that she would never leave Chika for any other lady. She was said to have threatened further that Chinwe must steer clear of Chika.
On that fateful day, she had in connivance with another suspect, one Obiora Chukwuegbo stormed Chika’s home and set Chinwe on fire.
The CP explained that there was smoke everywhere and it was through the assistance of  neighbours that  Chinwe was rescued through the window as the fire consumed  the room.
She was said to have been taken to a private hospital  before she was transferred to Annunciation Specialist Hospital  Emene, Enugu State where she is still receiving treatment.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police, State CID Enugu, Mr. Philip Ogbadu told Sunday Sun that it was a terrible incident. “We have been able to arrest the three suspects, Chika Kelechi, Cynthia Onah and Obiora Chukwuegbo  and that the case is still under investigation.
The boyfriend, Chika told Sunday Sun  “I am a driver and I’ve been dating Chinwe for the past five years. We had little quarrel and we stopped dating. I meet Cynthia who is a prostitute and dated her for just one month. We separated one month after because at times she would be chasing me with a knife. I couldn’t bear it and so I went back to settle with my former girlfriend.
Cynthia didn’t give up as she threatened that she was going to deal with us. She even threatened to pour acid on me.
Being a driver, I travelled the day Cynthia burnt my girlfriend. It was one of my neighbours that called me to say that my house was on fire and that somebody poured fuel under the door and it exploded and burnt my girlfriend who was sleeping in the room; that they have rescued her through the window.
“When I got home, I saw that all my property had been burnt to ashes. My girlfriend was hospitalized because she sustained injuries from the fire. But I am determined and I have promised God that with the condition of my  girlfriend that I am still going to marry her.”
The suspect, Cynthia said “I started dating Chika when he had misunderstanding with his former girlfriend, Chinwe.
“We dated for one month and then he told me that he was no longer interested in marrying me. Chika is owing me N12,000. When we had a quarrel, I did not threaten him with a knife. I only used the knife to deflate his tyres.
“I have quarreled with Chinwe several times. I sent her a  text message to leave my boyfriend. Because she threatened  me, I also threatened her that  she will never enjoy the relationship. I don’t  know anything about who  took fuel to the house of her boyfriend and burnt  the house.”
Cynthia who hails from  Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of  Enugu State added “On that fateful day, Chika called my phone at night  and said that I should meet him at Emene junction. I was out waiting for him when the policemen from the State CID arrested me. I didn’t know anything about the incident. I only know we have traded words.”
When  Sunday Sun visited the victim at the Annunciation Specialist Hospital Emene Area, Enugu State, she said: “I am still shocked at what happened. I regret dating Chika as I have been turned to something else now. I saw  Cynthia Onah and  Chukwuegbo Obiora after they had poured  fuel under the door and fire was everywhere. I was calling him for help. It was when I was calling  for help through the other window that  I saw  Cynthia Onah  and Obiora Chkwuegbo  running away and I was shouting for help until the neighbours broke one of the windows and carried me out from the window”,  she said.
“My relationship with Chika is over. I am in pains and agony. I didn’t know what to do. I was sleeping and suddenly I saw smoke and it exploded and caught fire. I could have been burnt to ashes if not for the neighbours who broke through the window and rescued me,” she added.
CP Adamu said the suspects would soon be charged to court.
